divergence - definition - vectors and calculus

Definition: An operator that measures a vector field's tendency to originate from or converge upon a given point.

In a system of Cartesian coordinates, the divergence of a vector field, F, is defined to be

    F=∂Fx/∂x + ∂Fy/∂y + ∂Fz/∂xz
Another common notation for the divergence is ∇·F
