heat death - definition

Definition: The condition of the universe when entropy is maximised and all large-scale samples of matter are at a uniform temperature. In this condition no energy is available for doing work and the universe is finally unwound.

Whether this condition will eventuate is debatable, as the universe may not end up expanding, but may instead collapse in under its own weight. Also, it might not be possible to consider the universe as a whole to be in thermodynamic equilibrium, so the idea of entropy may not be definable for the entire universe.
