Definition: Relative distortion of a solid. Longitudinal strain leads to a body being stretched or compressed, due to a force perpendicular to the planes of the object. Shear strain causes an object to distort due to a force parallel to the planes - making a square in to a rhombus. A strain is related to the stress causing it by the elastic modulus
