valence electron
Definition: Electrons weakly held in the outer electronic shell of an atom. Due to their distance from the nucleus, they are more susceptible to electrical attraction to other atoms. These weakly held electrons can often be shared with other atoms with a weak attractive nature (covalent bonding) or stolen by very attractive atoms, creating two ions, which usually form an ionic bond.
