A Dentists Mirror

Magnifying Mirrors

A dentist wants a small mirror that, when placed 2.2cm from a tooth, will produce a 4.5X upright image. What kind of mirror must be used and what must its radius of curvature be? m=4.5

di=-4.5do

Where di,o are the image and object positions respectively.

We use the mirror equation:

    1/f=1/do+1/di

    =(1/do-1/4.5do)

    =(35/45)(1/do)

    =7/(9do)

    f=2.8cm

    r=2f=5.6cm

as r is positive, this is a concave mirror.
